Career coaching is a process which can help individuals to:
- Choose a new job or career
- Change jobs within a similar sector
- Increase their satisfaction with their present career
This process will answer the following questions
- What do I want to do?
- How do I get there from where I am today?
Career coaching can help to develop career goals and establish a process to reach those goals. It can help to identify strengths, abilities, skills and interests and how to combine these factors to decide on career options.
Tools used in career coaching include
Myers Briggs Type Indicator – a self report personality profiling tool to help with understanding an individuals preferences for areas such as gathering information and making decisions. This tool helps to understand our preferences and how these can have an impact on our choice of career, managing change and how we prefer to manage the career exploration process. Results from MBTI profiling can also be used for ongoing personal development.
Strong Interest Inventory – Questionnaire and report. This is used to help individuals understand their work interests and to show different role options. This is not a test of ability, it is an inventory of interests and provides a useful starting point from which to explore different career options. Areas covered within the report include level of interest in six General Occupational Themes, level of interest in 25 different areas of work and results against over 200 different occupations.
Strengthscope - Questionnaire and report. This focuses on an individuals own perception of their strengths and how they are being utilised in the workplace. A multi rater option is available for comments from colleagues and others. The report highlights your 'Significant 7' strengths and gives indicators as to how these could be utilised in the workplace to enhance motivation and enjoyment of your current or future role.
Typical career coaching sessions last between 2 to 3 hours and can be tailored to the needs of individuals. Follow up sessions can also be included in the process.
There is a small amount of pre preparation including completion of appropriate questionnaires. This can include completion of a self assessment questionnaire to start the process of reviewing values and priorities. This can help to accelerate the process particularly where a change of career or direction may be being considered.
